What to put on a sales CV

A sales CV is judged on numbers more than almost any other kind. Whether you sell in a showroom, on the phone, in the field or to other businesses, the hiring manager wants to see your targets, how you did against them, and how you find, win and keep customers.

Put your best result in your profile and give each role its own figures, with the period and the target.

Whatever the job, the UK CV format applies: your name and contact details, a short profile, experience with the most recent first, then education and skills. No photo, age or date of birth.

  1. A profile with your headline result

What you sell, to whom (consumers, small businesses, enterprise or the public sector) and your best result, such as a year over target.

  2. Results in every role

Results against target, revenue or margin won, new accounts, renewals and retention, and where you ranked in the team. Keep every figure accurate: you may be asked to back it up.

  3. How you sell

Average deal size, sales cycle, the methods you use (such as SPIN, MEDDIC or Challenger) and how you build pipeline.

  4. Tools

CRMs such as Salesforce or HubSpot, LinkedIn Sales Navigator and sales engagement tools.

  5. Field sales

Your territory, a full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.

Sales CVs: your questions

What numbers should I put on a sales CV?

Your results against target (for example 118% of target for the year), revenue or margin you brought in, new accounts won, average deal size and retention. Give the period, and keep every figure accurate.

How do I write a sales CV with no sales experience?

Show the skills sales relies on: persuading people, handling rejection, hitting targets and building relationships. Retail, hospitality, fundraising and customer service all have examples, and any target you beat counts.

Should I put my salary or commission on my CV?

No. Leave pay for the conversation with the recruiter, or the application form if it asks.
