What to put on a teacher CV

Many UK schools and trusts ask for their own application form rather than a CV, as part of safer recruitment, and posts are often advertised on the DfE’s Teaching Vacancies service, TES or a local authority site. A strong CV is still worth having: supply agencies, tutoring companies, colleges and many independent and international schools ask for one, and it gives you everything you need for the form.

Heads look for your qualified teacher status, your phase and subjects, the key stages you have taught and evidence that your pupils make progress.

Whatever the job, the UK CV format applies: your name and contact details, a short profile, experience with the most recent first, then education and skills. No photo, age or date of birth.

  1. Qualifications first

Your degree, your teacher training (PGCE, School Direct, SCITT or a teaching apprenticeship) and QTS with the year. Teaching in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland? Give your GTCS, EWC or GTCNI registration.

  2. A profile with your phase and subject

For example a primary teacher with experience across Key Stages 1 and 2 and a lead role in reading, or a secondary science teacher who teaches to A level.

  3. Teaching experience

Each school with its type (academy, maintained, independent), your years there, the year groups and subjects you taught and any responsibilities, such as subject lead, form tutor or mentor.

  4. Evidence of impact

Progress or results for groups you taught, interventions you ran or schemes you introduced, as long as the figures are accurate and you are allowed to share them. Never name pupils.

  5. Safeguarding and training

Your safeguarding level and date, an enhanced DBS, paediatric first aid for early years, and training in schemes such as Read Write Inc. or White Rose Maths.

  6. Beyond the classroom

Clubs, trips, productions, sports teams and pastoral roles. Schools value people who add to school life.

Teacher CVs: your questions

Do schools accept a CV instead of an application form?

Often not. Many schools and trusts ask every candidate to complete their application form, in line with safer recruitment guidance, and some say a CV on its own will not be considered. Check the advert. Supply agencies, tutoring companies and many independent and international schools do ask for a CV.

What should an early career teacher (ECT) put on a CV?

Your degree, your training route and QTS, then your placements: the schools, the key stages and what you taught, and what you learned. Add anything that shows you will contribute beyond the classroom, such as running a club.

How long should a teaching CV be?

Two pages. Put your qualifications and QTS on page one, with your current or most recent post.

Should I include pupil results on my CV?

Yes, if they are accurate and you are allowed to share them, for example the progress a group made or exam results for your classes. Leave out anything that could identify a pupil.
