When a professional CV template works best

Professional designs suit law, finance, consulting, the public sector, academia and senior or executive roles, where a calm, traditional look fits the setting. Several use serif type and a centred header; Mayfair and Belgravia are built for senior careers, and Academic puts education first.

All of them keep to one column of real text, so they read in order on screen, on paper and in applicant tracking systems.

  1. Lead with scale

Open with the size of what you are responsible for, such as the team, budget or programme, and the results you are known for.

  2. Trim older roles

Keep the detail for roughly the last ten years. Earlier roles can be a line each.

  3. Two pages, three at most

A long career can run to three pages, but page one should make the case on its own.

  4. Choose Serif or Sans to suit the sector

Serif type feels traditional and Sans feels more current. Most of these designs offer both.

Professional CV templates: your questions

What is the best CV template for a senior role?

One that puts your scope and results first. Mayfair opens with a profile panel and core competencies, and Belgravia leads each role with the organisation, which suits well-known employers.

Is a serif font OK on a CV?

Yes. Serif type reads well in print and suits formal sectors. Keep the body text at a comfortable size and use one font throughout.

Can a professional CV be more than two pages?

For a long career, an academic post or some public sector roles, yes, and there is no page limit on downloads. For most jobs, two pages is still the norm.
