How to pick a CV template for UK jobs

Choosing a design

  1. Start with the job, not the design

Look at the advert and the sector. Law, finance and the public sector expect a calm, traditional look; design and marketing roles leave more room for colour.

  2. Make it easy to scan

Recruiters often decide in seconds whether to read on. Clear headings, white space and bullet points beat clever layouts.

  3. Use one column for online applications

Every design here is real text, but large employers’ application systems read one column most reliably. Keep two-column designs for sending your CV to a person.

  4. Pick for your stage of career

Starting out? A graduate design puts education first. Senior? A professional design leaves room for scope and results.

  5. Keep the colour to the headings

One accent colour is plenty. Dark text on white reads best on screen and in print.

The UK CV format

  • Two pages is normal. One page suits a first CV.
  • Start with your name, phone, email and town. You don’t need your full address.
  • Add a personal statement: three to five lines on who you are and the job you want.
  • List your work history in reverse-chronological order, most recent job first.
  • Then education, skills and anything else that helps, such as certifications.
  • Leave out a photo, your age or date of birth, marital status and nationality.
  • Send a PDF unless the employer asks for Word.

CV templates: your questions

Are these CV templates really free?

Yes. Every design is free to use on a free CV Mojo account, and you can download your CV as often as you like. There is no watermark and no page limit.

Which CV template is best for UK jobs?

For most jobs, a simple or modern design in one column: it is what UK recruiters are used to, and applicant tracking systems read it reliably. Choose a professional design for senior or formal roles, a graduate design if you are starting out, and a creative design where presentation is part of the job.

Can applicant tracking systems read these CV templates?

Every design is real, selectable text rather than an image, with standard section headings. One-column designs are the safest for large online application systems, because some older systems read two-column layouts in an odd order.

Can I download my CV as a Word document?

Yes. Alongside the PDF you can download a Word (.doc) file with the same content in a plain layout, ready to edit. The designs themselves are made for PDF, which keeps the layout exactly as you see it.

Can I change the colours and fonts?

Most designs come in 8 colours (navy, blue, teal, forest, plum, burgundy, bronze and charcoal) with a Sans or Serif font. A few classic designs keep their own colours and font.

Should I put a photo on my CV in the UK?

No. UK employers do not expect a photo, and leaving it out, along with your age, date of birth and marital status, avoids bias. None of these designs has a space for a photo.

How long should my CV be?

Two pages is normal in the UK. One page suits school leavers, students and graduates, and a long senior or academic career can run to three. Our guide to CV length explains more.

Do I need a CV already?

No. You can build one step by step in the guided editor, or add the CV you have and pick a design for it. Never written one? Our first CV tool asks a few easy questions and turns your answers into a proper CV.
