What to put on a project manager CV

Project managers work in IT, construction, engineering, marketing, the public sector and charities, and employers in each want the same proof: what you delivered, how big it was, and how you handled the risks and the people along the way. Treat your CV like a short project report.

Give each project its budget, team, method and outcome, and put your certifications where they are seen.

Whatever the job, the UK CV format applies: your name and contact details, a short profile, experience with the most recent first, then education and skills. No photo, age or date of birth.

  1. A profile with your biggest project

Your sector, the kind of projects you run and the largest you have delivered, in budget and team size.

  2. Certifications

PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner, APM qualifications (PFQ or PMQ), PMP, and Agile ones such as Scrum Master or AgilePM, with the year.

  3. Projects and results

One line of context (what, for whom, budget, team, timescale), then what you did and what happened: delivered on time, under budget, adopted by users. Keep the figures accurate.

  4. Methods and tools

Agile, waterfall or hybrid, and tools such as Jira, Confluence, MS Project or Smartsheet.

  5. Governance and stakeholders

Steering groups, RAID logs, change control, supplier management and reporting to senior leaders.

Project manager CVs: your questions

Which project management certifications should I list?

Any you hold, with the year: PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner, APM qualifications (PFQ or PMQ), PMP, or Agile ones such as Scrum Master. PRINCE2 and APM often appear in UK public sector and construction adverts, so match the advert.

How do I describe a project on my CV?

One line of context (what, for whom, the budget and the team), then two or three bullet points on what you did and what happened as a result. Accurate numbers beat adjectives.

I am a project coordinator. Does this template work for me?

Yes. Lead with the projects you support, the tools you use (such as MS Project, RAID logs and SharePoint) and any qualification you are working towards, such as PRINCE2 Foundation or the APM PFQ.
