Marketing cover letter example

Priya Sandhu, Digital Marketing Executive, outdoor clothing brand · two years in-house at a garden centre group

Dear Mr Whitaker,

Your Digital Marketing Executive role caught my eye because it sits where I do my best work: email, paid social and the content that ties them together. I have spent two years in-house at a garden centre group with eleven stores, and I would love to bring that mix of channels to a brand I already buy from.

I run our weekly email in Mailchimp to around 40,000 subscribers, plan the seasonal calendar with our buyers and build our paid social campaigns in Meta Ads Manager. This spring I split our single newsletter into three versions based on what people had bought before, and our click-throughs roughly doubled over the season. The format is now our standard.

Your advert asks for someone confident with GA4 who is happy to write. I report on our campaigns in GA4 and Looker Studio every month, and I write most of our product emails and blog posts myself, so I am used to turning a brief into copy that sounds like the brand. I have attached two short campaign summaries with the results.

I am particularly drawn to Fernlea’s repair service and the way you talk about it: it is the kind of story that works across email, social and the website. My notice period is one month, and I would welcome the chance to talk about the role.

Yours sincerely,
Priya Sandhu

Tips for yours

  • Match your tone to the brand. A letter to a playful consumer brand can be a little warmer than one to a business software firm, but keep it professional.
  • Use real numbers you are allowed to share. If the figures are confidential, describe the change instead, such as doubled, halved or the best month on record.
  • Cut the jargon. "Drove engagement" says little; "turned our Instagram enquiries from a handful a week into two or three a day" says a lot.
  • Proofread it twice, out loud. A typo in a marketing cover letter is noticed more than in most jobs.
  1. Your channels

The channels you know best, such as email, paid social, SEO, content or events, in the order the advert lists them.

  2. One campaign, start to finish

The goal, what you did and what happened. A clear before and after says more than a list of tools.

  3. Tools and platforms

GA4, Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Canva or a website editor: only the ones you really use.

  4. How you write

The letter is read as a sample of your writing. Keep it clear, warm and free of buzzwords.

  5. Why this brand

Something specific: a campaign you noticed, their tone of voice, a product you use or an audience you understand.

  6. Your work

A link to a portfolio, or one or two short campaign summaries if you are free to share them.

Marketing cover letters: your questions

Should a marketing cover letter be creative?

A little personality helps, but keep the structure simple: the job, your evidence, why them and a close. Save bold ideas for your portfolio or a short campaign summary, and make the letter easy to read.

What if I cannot share campaign figures?

Describe the change instead of the number, for example that enquiries doubled over a season or that the cost of each lead fell. Never share anything your employer has asked you to keep private.

How do I write a marketing cover letter with no marketing experience?

Use what you have done: running social media for a club or charity, a blog, a university project or marketing tasks in another job. Show what you made and what happened, and mention any free platform training you have completed, such as HubSpot Academy or Google Skillshop.

Should I include a link to my portfolio?

Yes, if you have one. Put the link with your contact details and mention one piece of work in the letter, with a line on the brief and the result.
