Healthcare assistant cover letter example

Chloe Henderson, Healthcare Assistant, surgical ward · two years as a senior care assistant in a nursing home

Dear Ms Fielding,

I would like to apply for the Healthcare Assistant post on your surgical ward. For the past two years I have been a senior care assistant in a 40-bed nursing home, and I am ready to use those skills in a hospital, where I can keep learning alongside a nursing team.

Each shift I support residents with personal care, help them to eat and drink, and record observations, food and fluid charts and skin checks on our digital care system. I use hoists and slide sheets every day, and I take pride in noticing small changes. In the spring I saw that a resident was more confused than usual and not drinking, recorded a full set of observations and told the nurse in charge, who arranged a GP review that afternoon.

Your advert asks for experience of care before and after surgery. I have not worked on a surgical ward yet, but I have cared for many residents coming back from hospital after hip operations, helping them to move safely with their physiotherapy plan and keeping an eye on their pain and dressings for anything the nurse needs to know.

I hold the Care Certificate and a Level 2 Diploma in Care, and my Basic Life Support, moving and handling and safeguarding adults training is up to date. My enhanced DBS is on the Update Service.

I can work long days, nights and weekends, and my notice period is four weeks. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,
Chloe Henderson

Tips for yours

  • Use the ward’s own words from the advert, such as "dignity" or "fundamentals of care", where they are true for you.
  • Only mention clinical tasks you are trained and signed off for, such as venepuncture or ECG recording.
  • Keep people anonymous: describe what happened, never who it was.
  • No paid care experience? Lead with why you want the role, then any caring you have done for family or as a volunteer.
  1. The setting you know

Hospital ward, care home, home care or clinic, the patients you have supported and for how long.

  2. Hands-on care

Personal care, eating and drinking, moving and handling, and the observations you are trained to record, such as NEWS2 or blood glucose.

  3. Spotting and escalating

One short example of noticing a change in someone and telling the right person. It is what ward managers most want to see.

  4. Training and checks

The Care Certificate, any care diploma, Basic Life Support, moving and handling, safeguarding and your enhanced DBS.

  5. Working with the team

Handovers, helping nurses with admissions and discharges, and how you support families and visitors.

  6. Shifts

Long days, nights, weekends or bank work, and your notice period.

Healthcare assistant cover letters: your questions

Do I need a cover letter for an NHS healthcare assistant job?

Usually not. Most NHS posts are applied for on NHS Jobs or Trac, where you write a supporting statement instead. Treat it like a longer cover letter: go through the person specification in order, with an example for each point. Our guide to NHS applications explains more.

What should I write if I have never worked in healthcare?

Say why you want to do this work, then give examples that show care, patience and reliability: looking after a relative, volunteering, or a job serving the public where people relied on you. Say you are happy to complete the Care Certificate and any training the role needs.

Should I mention the Care Certificate?

Yes, if you have it, with the year. If you are working towards it, say so. It shows you already know the standards expected of support workers in England.

How long should a healthcare assistant cover letter be?

Less than one page: four or five short paragraphs. Keep the detail of every task for your CV.
