Electrician cover letter example

Liam Doherty, Electrician, commercial fit-out contractor · five years qualified, mostly domestic and small commercial work

Dear Mr Pryce,

I am a qualified electrician with five years’ experience since passing my AM2, and I would like to join your commercial fit-out team in Swindon. Most of my work so far has been domestic rewires and small shop and office jobs, and I am keen to move onto larger commercial projects.

With my current employer I run jobs on my own from first fix to testing and handover: consumer unit changes, full rewires, EICRs, fault finding and, lately, EV charger installs. I hold my 18th Edition (BS 7671), City & Guilds 2391 in inspection and testing and an ECS Gold Card. Last year I led the rewire of a three-storey office above a high street shop, working around the tenants so their business never had to close, and we handed it over on the agreed date.

Your advert mentions containment, distribution boards and fire alarms. I have installed tray and trunking on office refits, terminated and labelled sub-mains and boards, and fitted and tested addressable fire alarm devices under a supervisor. I also hold IPAF and PASMA tickets and asbestos awareness, all in date.

I have a full UK driving licence and my own hand tools, and I am happy to travel across Wiltshire and along the M4. My notice period is two weeks, and I would welcome the chance to talk about your upcoming projects.

Yours sincerely,
Liam Doherty

Tips for yours

  • Keep it plain and short. Contracts and site managers often read applications on a phone between jobs.
  • Be honest about what you have done on your own and what you have done under supervision. It builds trust, and it will come up at interview or on site.
  • Moving from domestic to commercial or industrial work? Say so in the opening and show where your experience overlaps.
  1. Qualifications and card

Your Level 3 qualification and AM2, 18th Edition, inspection and testing, and your ECS card grade.

  2. The work you do

Domestic, commercial or industrial, and the jobs you do most: rewires, fit-outs, testing, fault finding, fire alarms, EV chargers or solar PV.

  3. One job in a sentence or two

The site, what you did and how it went, such as finishing on time or working safely in an occupied building.

  4. Running jobs and people

Whether you work alone, run small jobs or supervise apprentices and improvers.

  5. Safety tickets

IPAF, PASMA, SSSTS, asbestos awareness and first aid, in date.

  6. Practical details

Driving licence, tools, how far you will travel and your notice period.

Electrician cover letters: your questions

Do electricians need a cover letter?

Not for every job. Agencies and many contractors just want your CV and a call. A short letter helps when you email a contractor directly, apply for a maintenance or facilities role with a large employer, or are moving into a new kind of work.

What should an electrical apprentice or improver put in a cover letter?

Your college course and level, where you are with your AM2, the contractor you trained with and the work you have done under supervision. Say what you want to learn next and show that you are reliable on site.

Should I mention my ECS card in the cover letter?

Yes, briefly, with its grade, alongside your 18th Edition and any inspection and testing qualification. The full list, with expiry dates, belongs on your CV.
